  1. Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 DX II Wide-Angle Zoom Lens

    Tokina-11-16

Ours go to 11.  Millimeters, that is.  This Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 zoom lens will fit EF and EF-S mounts, although it vignettes on full frame cameras at wider than 16mm. This is a great lens to capture action and events up close.  It has modest barrel distortion but it’s definitely not a fisheye.  Autofocus performance is excellent, and you can pull the focus ring for manual focus with a hard infinity stop, great for video shooters.

We love this lens paired with a jib or slider dolly for sweeping wide shots.  A great option for landscape shooters, its sweet spot seems to be around f/11. For shooters who would rather have a manual lens, the Rokinon 14mm should be considered.

If you are shooting on a smaller sensor like the BMCC, BMPCC, or MFT cameras, this lens is a must-have for its focal length, speed, and great optics. Don’t forget you may need an EF lens adapter.

The Tokina has 77mm front threads. This lens pairs really well with the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8, with the same maximum aperture, filter size, and weight.

If you’re considering this lens for fullframe, you might also want to consider the Sigma 20mm f/1.8.  It’s a bit sharper, 1 1/3 stops faster, with less distortion, and just a touch less wide.

  2. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II USM Zoom Lens

Canon-24-70-2-8Canon’s 24-70mm f/2.8 L II lens is the professional’s standard midrange zoom. The zoom length is practical and the lens is fast enough to use indoors. Comparing it to the 24-105mm f/4 L, or the original Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, we find it to be significantly sharper, with less distortion. In our opinion, it’s the strongest midrange zoom made for any full frame camera.

24-70mm is an obvious choice for a zoom lens on a full-frame camera, but works on a crop-factor camera, too, if you don’t mind it being on the heavy side.  It has 82mm front threads and close focuses to 16″.

If you have a need for a stabilized midrange zoom, we love the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC.

  3. Zeiss 85mm T1.5 CP2 Lens with EF Mount

The Zeiss CP.2 85mm T1.5 lens with EF mount is an excellent long lens on both full frame and super 35 sensors.  The Compact Prime lens family offer full-frame coverage for DSLRs and speedboosters, and are equally at home on cinema cameras with EF mounts and DSLRs.

The fourteen-blade iris makes for near-perfect circle bokeh and Zeiss’ T* coating reduces reflections and flare.  Zeiss CP.2s are fully manual, and barrel sizes are matched for easy lens changes, even behind a mattebox and follow focus. All our CP.2 lenses have imperial markings (in feet).

Our Zeiss CP.2 lenses can be rented as a kit. We don’t accept advance reservations for individual lenses, but you can pick them up same-day with an appointment.

  4. Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

    canon-100-400-lens

The Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens is a professional-level telephoto lens. It features image stabilization, very fast USM focusing, and outstanding imaging performance.

This long lens is often the best choice for outdoors: particularly sports, wildlife, weddings and other events. It is also an amazing portrait lens, creating extreme subject-background separation and telephoto compression. It is a popular choice for both photo and video shooters.  If you need an even longer lens, we suggest renting it with our Canon 1.4x telephoto extender.

The EF mount fits every Canon DSLR ever made, and can be mounted on most mirrorless cameras with an adapter. At three pounds, it’s on the heavier side, but a tripod foot is included with the lens rental. Like many Canon L-series and telephoto lenses, It has 77mm front threads. The lens extends significantly when zoomed, making it a poor choice for matte boxes.

  5. Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Zoom Lens EF

    tamron-24-70

The Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD EF zoom lens is a versatile midrange zoom. The f/2.8 speed matches Canon’s 24-70 zoom, but Tamron has added image stabilization (they call it vibration compensation or VC).  The zoom range is very useful, from moderately wide to short telephoto. The EF mount and full-frame coverage mean it works on every Canon DSLR ever, as well as any camera with an EF or EF-S mount.

For photo shooters, the Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) motor makes for fast and accurate autofocus. Vibration compensation is helpful for stills, and exceptionally helpful for handheld video.

The Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC close focuses to 18″ and has 82mm front threads.

    8mm-cine

The Rokinon (or Samyang) 8mm T3.8 HD fisheye is a cinema-geared prime lens for cameras with Super 35mm and smaller sensors and EF or EF-S mounts.  Larger sensors will show vignetting. This lens is incredibly wide, with a modest amount of fisheye distortion.

This is the cine version of the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5. The cine lens features a de-clicked aperture and cine gears for easy use with a follow focus.

  7. Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro telephoto lens

    100mm-macro-IS-lens

The Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS macro lens is well-suited to shooting small objects up close, as well as portraits. The macro lens has a 1:1 magnification, and the EF mount will work with both full frame and crop factor cameras (that means every Canon DSLR ever made).

The image stabilization is useful for handheld video work, as well as portraiture. Most macro photographers will using a tripod, making IS less necessary. Autofocus is fast and accurate. The lens accepts 67mm front filters.

The lens is optically near-perfect, with remarkable sharpness, virtually no distortion, and great imaging corner-to-corner.

  8. Opteka 6.5mm f/3.5 Fisheye Lens EF

    ultrawide-fisheye-lens

The Opteka 6.5mm f/3.5 HD fisheye is an extreme wide-angle lens that produces an edge-to-edge image on an APS-C sized sensor. We know of (very few) lenses for Canon that are wider, but they are circular fisheye lenses.  This lens is really, really, obscenely wide. Straight lines will appear bent, and perspective is extreme. This lens is best suited to specialty applications, like comedic perspective shots and Beastie Boys music videos.

Performance-wise, this lens performs reasonably well, considering how extreme it is. If it’s not using the same optics as the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5mm, it’s close enough that we couldn’t tell in quick comparison testing.

The lens is an EF mount, so it will fit on a fullframe camera like the Canon 5D series, but it will function as a circular fisheye (the corners of your image will remain black).

The lens is fully manual, with aperture and focus controls on the barrel.  Focus is nearly irrelevant on a lens this wide, with a hyperfocal distance of about 3 feet wide open. The lens hood is detachable. The lens lacks front threads, so round filters are not an option.

This lens is designed to work with any crop-factor Canon DSLRs, such as the T-series, 7D series, 60D, 70D, etc.

  9. Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens

    tokina-16-28

The Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8  zoom lens for Canon is a full frame wide zoom. That means it works on any Canon EF or EF-S mount camera. Most shooters with crop cameras will probably prefer Tokina’s more portable 11-16mm f/2.8 II lens, though. This lens is very popular with photographers, but docu-style video shooters will appreciate the full-time manual focus option and useful zoom range.

This lens performs exceptionally well, outperforming most wide zooms from Canon, even wide open. Autofocus is fast and not too loud. Distortion is minimal, making this a great lens for architecture and interiors. The lens hood is built in, and does not accept filters. It close focuses to about ten inches, giving you some creative options for extreme perspective.

  10. Canon 300mm f/4L IS telephoto lens

    telephoto-lens-rental

The Canon 300mm f/4L IS telephoto lens is an incredible lens for sports, wildlife, and outdoor portraiture. The extremely long telephoto is an EF mount, and will work with both full frame and crop factor cameras.

The lens, while not pocket-sized, is a pretty manageable size and weight when compared to other professional lenses in this focal range.  It close focuses better than any 300mm lens in Canon’s lineup. This makes it possibly the best lens ever made for faux-macro work like dragonflies, small mammals, and other tiny, skittish things.

The built-in image stabilization makes a huge difference for photo and video on a lens this long. A retractable hood is built-in.The lens is exceptionally sharp even wide open, and backgrounds fall off to a beautiful bokeh. It can be fitted with our 1.4x teleconverter to function as a 420mm f/5.6 lens. Like many L-series Canon lenses, it accepts 77mm front filters.
