  1. Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art EF Lens

The Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 zoom lens for Canon is the fastest zoom lens available for DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Part of Sigma’s Art line, the lens is one of the best-reviewed zoom lenses for photo and video, ever. It is designed specifically for crop (APS-C) sized sensors, and will not work with larger, full frame cameras.

This ultrafast zoom is perfect for shooting indoors and at night. The wide-angle to medium focal length is well-suited for architecture and landscape shots. An HSM motor provides fast, silent autofocus for photo and video. Like all Sigma Art lenses, it is compatible with the Sigma USB Dock.

The lens has 72mm filter threads and close focuses to 11″.

  2. Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS Zoom Lens

    canon-17-55-is

Canon’s 17-55mm f/2.8 IS zoom lens is a versatile option for anyone shooting on an EF-S mount on a crop factor camera or S35 video camera like a C100.  The image stabilization, zoom range, and fast optics make it our first choice for a video zoom on any Canon Rebel. It also works well on a GH4 or other MFT camera, especially with a speedbooster.

The lens is a massive upgrade from Canon’s 18-55mm kit lens, with a speed advantage of 2/3 to 2 full stops.  This makes it much more useful indoors. This lens works only with crop factor cameras with EF-S mounts.  For a full-frame camera, we suggest the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC lens instead.

  3. Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS Zoom Lens

    sigma-17-50-2-8

Sigma’s 17-50mm f/2.8 stabilized zoom lens is a direct competitor to Canon’s 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.  Sigma’s lens has similar performance, with lighter weight, better close focusing, and a reduced cost.

The Sigma 17-50mm lens has an EF mount, but only APS-C coverage, making it a good choice for cameras like a T3i, SL1, or even a C100. It also works well on a GH4 or other MFT cameras, with an EF to MFT adapter. For a full-frame camera like the Canon 5D mkIII, you should consider the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 instead.

The lens is a massive upgrade from Canon’s 18-55mm, with a speed advantage of 2/3 to 2 full stops.  This makes it much more useful indoors.

  4. Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Zoom Lens

    canon-18-135

Canon’s 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens is a natural choice if you need an affordable all-purpose zoom lens on a crop-factor camera.  The image stabilization helps with both photo and video shooting.

The lens is definitely an upgrade from Canon’s 18-55mm, with more than twice as much zoom range.  This lens works only with crop factor cameras with EF-S mounts.  For a full-frame camera, we suggest the Canon 24-105mm f/4L instead.

  5. Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L Lens

    Canon-20-35mm-wide-angle-zoom-lens

The Canon 20-35mm f/2.8L lens is a wide angle zoom that works with full frame as well as crop factor cameras, and fits every camera Canon has made since the mid-1980s.  What’s more important is that it makes great pictures and video.  The L-series designation means sturdy all-metal build and fast USM autofocus for stills shooters.  Sharp even at f/2.8, by f/5.6 we’d be happy making landscape prints that were six feet across.

We love this vintage lens for a stack of reasons.  First, everybody loves 20mm and 35mm focal lengths.  Second, the bokeh on this lens is fantastic.  The weight is much more manageable than similar wides, like the beefy Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8. As an added bonus for video shooters, there is little-to-no breathing on focus pulls. This wide lens has the least distortion of any Canon zoom in this range, particularly at around 24mm where edges get perfectly square.  If you are shooting portraits or architecture and want a wide zoom, this is definitely Canon’s strongest offering.

Shows subtle vignetting at f/2.8 on the wide side.  Almost completely even by f/4. It has 72mm front threads.

  6. Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens

Rent-Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-III-USM-LensWhen you need the reach of a telephoto zoom lens on a budget, the Canon EF-mount 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM is a logical option.  Perfect for sports and wildlife during the day when shooting at f/5.6 is an option. It’s designed for use on full frame cameras, and you’ll get even more telephoto (120mm-480mm equivalent) on a Canon Rebel.

This lens, like many of Canon’s budget zooms, has a 58mm front filter size.  It close-focuses to 1.5 meters.

If you’re looking for a nicer telephoto, we strongly suggest the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS or Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lenses.

  7. Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 EX DG IF zoom lens

    rent-sigma-24-60

Our Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 lens is a full-frame midrange zoom with impressive f/2.8 speed and good all-around performance in an EF mount.  It’s about as sharp as the 24-70  f/2.8L from Canon, but not as crisp as the updated 24-70mm f/2.8L II.

This lens has 77mm front filter threads.  It close-focuses to 15 inches.

This lens and the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 pair nicely together, with the same maximum aperture, filter sizes, and weight, plus complimentary zoom ranges.

  8. Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Zoom Lens

    canon-24-105mm-lens

Canon’s image stabilized midrange zoom is a great all-around lens, and the most popular in their flagship L-series. It’s relatively sharp wide open, particularly on the wide side.  The image stabilization is useful for photo and incredibly helpful on handheld video shots.  The Canon 24-105mm is an obvious choice for a zoom lens on a full-frame camera, but works on a crop-factor camera, too, if you don’t mind your camera weighing less than your lens.  It has 77mm front threads and close focuses to 18″.

If you have a need for a faster fullframe midrange zoom, we love the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II  or Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC.
