  1. Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 EF Ultrawide Lens

    14mm-wide-lens

The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens fits all Canon digital cameras and anything else with an EF or EF-S mount. 14mm is a great length for dramatic wide angles. This is the widest fullframe lens Rokinon offers.  It’s also a very useful wide on smaller sensors like APS-C, as well as smaller sensors like on Blackmagic and Panasonic cameras.

It’s not particularly fisheyed, but there is some mustache distortion, which can be addressed in post processing. The lens is manual focus only, but focusing on the fly isn’t much of an issue with a lens this wide.

This is the photo version of the lens, with a clicking aperture ring and no focus gears. We also have the cinema version, for video shooters. The lens hood is fixed, so round filters aren’t an option.

This lens is our most popular ultrawide lens rental for photographers.

  2. Rokinon 85mm T/1.5 Cine Prime Lens

    rent-rokinon-85mm-t1-5

Rokinon adapted their prime full-frame photo lenses for video shooters and created a revolution in affordable cinema optics.  Optically, this EF 85mm T/1.5 is the same lens at their 85mm f/1.4, but with a de-clicked aperture and teeth on the focus ring to accept any standard follow focus. This is the best-reviewed of all their cine primes, and the fastest long lens in our inventory.  Wide open, we think it holds its own against the Canon CN-E 85mm, which is incredible at this price point.

This is our new go-to lens for interviews, and indispensable for events in low light. Even photo shooters can get some great images out of it, although if you prefer an autofocus prime, look at the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8.

  3. Canon 50mm f/1.4 EF Prime Lens

    Canon EF 50mm 1-4

Canon has it figured out with the 50mm f/1.4.  This all-purpose 50mm fixed lens is great for all kinds of shooting, including interiors and low light.  It’s very flattering as an interview or portrait lens, especially when mounted on a crop factor camera.

We love this Canon 50mm at f/1.8 and beyond for tack-sharp focus. Many photographers will claim it even outperforms the venerable Canon 50mm f/1.2L at that aperture. It has 58mm front threads, like most of the Canon primes in this class.

  4. Canon 40mm f/2.8 EF STM Prime Lens

    canon-40mm

Canon’s tiny 40mm f/2.8 lens gives full-frame coverage in a lens that’s less than an inch thick. The STM designation means it’s ready for autofocus in both photo and video. It accepts 52mm filters, and close-focuses to one foot.

While primes like the 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2.0 are faster, the 40mm f/2.8 is a great lens choice when you need a small size, or video autofocus.

  5. Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS Zoom Lens

    sigma-17-50-2-8

Sigma’s 17-50mm f/2.8 stabilized zoom lens is a direct competitor to Canon’s 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.  Sigma’s lens has similar performance, with lighter weight, better close focusing, and a reduced cost.

The Sigma 17-50mm lens has an EF mount, but only APS-C coverage, making it a good choice for cameras like a T3i, SL1, or even a C100. It also works well on a GH4 or other MFT cameras, with an EF to MFT adapter. For a full-frame camera like the Canon 5D mkIII, you should consider the Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 instead.

The lens is a massive upgrade from Canon’s 18-55mm, with a speed advantage of 2/3 to 2 full stops.  This makes it much more useful indoors.
